Province recognizes and celebrates Diwali

For almost one billion people around the world, Diwali is one of the most sacred times of the year. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is celebrated in various forms all over the world and with numerous events all around B.C.

Its origins date back thousands of years, with each region of India and Nepal having slightly different variations for how it began. The common thread between all the legends, however, is the triumph of good over evil.

During Diwali, I encourage people from all communities to take the opportunity to join in the events and experience the food, music and dance of this South Asian celebration. Sharing religious and cultural traditions between communities creates and builds understanding and multicultural ties. It is important that we recognize honour and celebrate British Columbia’s strong cultural diversity, as that is what makes us a model society - embracing the cultures and traditions of its people with opportunities for all to live and grow.

British Columbia is made up of cultures from more than 180 countries around the globe, creating a beautiful and economically diverse province that provides tremendous economic advantages. All British Columbians want opportunities to work hard and provide a good life for their families.

That’s why our government has a clear mandate to put families first. The Premier’s new BC Jobs Plan, “Canada Starts Here”, will provide those opportunities by recognizing and celebrating our multicultural and multilingual society as one of our strengths in encouraging global investment in a time of economic uncertainty.

As you celebrate the start of the New Year with the lighting of candles, diyas and fireworks, I offer you my best wishes for happiness, health and prosperity in the year ahead.
